Two Overwatch Hero Concepts

So last night I got bored and decided to start browsing /r/OverwatchHeroConcepts (which in my opinion is an amazing subreddit) on Reddit and it triggered in my mind for some reason that I myself should make hero concepts for Overwatch even though I only know information about the game through watching people stream Overwatch through Twitch (mamen on LA Valiant and Surefour in particular). Also please note that these concepts could be OPAF as Jeff likes saying. Anyways, here are the two hero concepts that I made:

Gloria Michalli

  • Occupation: Head of Overwatch Geology (formerly), Minister of Meteorology in Oasis
  • County of Origin: Milan, Italy
  • Role: Support
  • Difficulty: 1 star
  • Health: 150 (Health), 50 (Armor)
  • Lore: Gloria was head of the geology department at Overwatch during the Golden Age and was the person behind the idea of establishing Ecopoint: Antartica. She left Overwatch after repeated complications such as losing communication with Ecopoint: Antarctica and her practices of manipulating the Earth’s ozone to her command against the words of her superiors. She now is the Minister of Meteorology in Oasis after the disappearance of the person previously in the position.

The main idea I had coming into all of these hero concepts was what is lacking in the the lore currently. One of these spots in the lore was Oasis and its leaders, the Ministers. We already know Moira is the Minister of Genetics but there are clearly other ministers that are advertised in the City Center point of the map. Next for me came the implementation of what seemed one of the most concerning things that can be used as a weapon in Overwatch. It is a far stretch which is saying something because we have Winston, but I went with the ozone layers and the modern day problems with holes in the ozone layer. By this point in the history of the world in the Overwatch universe, it is proven as a fact that there are indeed holes in the ozone layer and scientists all the way back from the Golden Age of Overwatch are scrambling to find a solution but keep getting stopped due to the ethics they uphold. Gloria was one of the scientists trying to find a solution, but unlike the others, she did not uphold to ethics, similar to Moira. I want to note that Gloria and and Moira were not working at Overwatch at the same time.

It all came together now. Gloria Michalli had come into existence with a backstory. But I want to imply that there is more to her story. What could possibly continue with her and the Oasis story, is further integrate into the main story arc of Overwatch currently. I want to leave up for speculation that the previous Minister of Meteorology for Oasis disappeared because of Talon. Oasis is a city that is scientifically more advanced then the rest of the world, and having more people as ministers in Oasis that could possibly help Talon and give them the results of their research, like Moira, could make them an even greater threat to the world as they are unconventional ways of pushing the world forward like terrorist attacks.

Passive

O Zone: Each time Gloria uses an ability, she gains an 5m area of effect that boosts enemies incoming damage from her attacks by 4% and slowing them by 2% . When an enemy leaves the area, the debuffs will remain on them for 2 seconds and will refresh if they reenter the area.

Gloria's lore has a strong emphasize on her research into the ozone layer. Since she left Overwatch and became Minister of Meteorology at Oasis, she has harnessed the ozone layer to a great degree and can repair and damage it. Having the 4% for her own attacks will greatly help her for when she gets flanked by a Genji or Tracer and if the Gloria player has good communication with her team, will be able to catch the flanker.

Primary Fire

A hand gun that deals 6 damage to enemies with a maximum ammo storage of 20 and a reload time of 1.6 seconds.

Gloria's hand gun is different from others as she had integrated her ozone technology into it, enabling her to easily perform her abilities.

Shift Ability

Ultraviolet Spot: Gloria harnesses the ozone layer in a specific location and enemies that walk into it take at maximum, 35 damage over 5 seconds (7 damage per second) and crippling them. Has a cooldown of 8 seconds. “Be burned by the sun.”


Besides her ultimate, this is the only other active ability that Gloria has in her kit. I intend for this ability to be more of a cc to support her team and get people out of position then it is to be a DPS ability. It is an instant cast and can be shown where you are going to place it similar to Doomfist and his Seismic Slam ability.


Ultimate

Ozone Buffer: Gloria greatly repairs the ozone layer in 10m around her which heals any allies standing inside for 40 health per second for 10 seconds. Any enemies that stand around her cannot be healed until they leave the area. Enemies: “Feel the wrath of the ozone!” Allies: “Let the ozone heal you!”

Gloria's kit centers around cc. Her passive has a slow and her shift ability has a cripple. In her ultimate, she can put anti-heals on any enemies are are within 10 meters of her. So imagine the enemy Lucio are 2 auras active at the same time. One for healing his allies and the other for debuffing enemies with anti-heals. 

Gloria's ultimate is not supposed to be focused as a healing ultimate unless necessary. The main purpose for the ultimate is to turn a fight around if the enemy team has their healers up still. This can especially come in handy with a Mercy in Valkyrie that is flying over the area as she won't passively regenerate health with in the state until she leaves the area.

  • “What happened at Ecopoint: Antarctica was out of my control.” 
  • “The Earth holds many secrets.”
  • “Mei darling, you look fabulous!” 
  • “You kept science and from advancing for years while you worked at Overwatch Angela.” 
  • “The sun's radiation will only you a small bit if you stay on my good side.” 

Santiago Cortez

  • Occupation: Vishkar Field Agent
  • Country of Origin: Porlamar, Venezuela
  • Role: Offense (builder)
  • Difficulty: 3 stars
  • Health: 100 (Health), 150 (Shields)
  • Lore: Santiago was taken in by Vishkar after the Porlamar Omnium exploded during the first Omnic Crisis and leveled his home. Now Santiago is one of the architects using hard light technology to rebuild what is left of South America. 

I wanted Santiago to come from South America as the only other character from that region is Lucio. It also matched up with the lack of Vishkar currently in the lore and South America being the main focal point of where Vishkar lore is. So I picked Porlamar, Venezuela as the place where Santiago would be from and that one of the omniums in South America would be just outside the city in the mountain range. The God A.I. Supay, named after the Incan god of death, being the god program who controlled the omnics in South America. Supay blew up the Porlamar Omnium in a last effort because the United Nations was close to capturing the omnium. The explosion had very similar effects to the explosion of the Austrailia Outback Omnium. The island was flattened and there is now no sign of life within 20 miles of the island. 

Santiago was not in Porlamar at the time as he and his family narrowly escaped the explosion by boarding escape boats. Later in his childhood, his family gave him up to Vishkar to give him a better life as they had nothing left. Santiago was recruited into the Architech Academy and graduated with honors. He was put onto the team that was rebuilding South America. Unlike Symmetra who is focused in Brazil, Santiago is focused in northern South America, particularly Venezuela as it was the country hurt the most from the omnic crisis.

Passive

Hard Light: Santiago regenerates 5 light per second to help him use his abilities. Can hold 100 light at maximum. Every 3rd hit with his knives will regenerate 2 light.

To make Santiago stand out from Torbjorn and Symmetra. To do this I gave him light as a resource. It will appear on screen like how it does for Moira and her essence resource. I went with 100 light as the maximum as his abilities are almost always are going to be immediately off of cooldown right as his buildings get destroyed and so he's going to have a need of a large resource storage. It should be easily possible for someone to run out of light by just spamming Santiago's abilities. A skilled player will know which ability to prioritize in a certain situation.

Primary Fire

Santiago's right arm is made of hard light technology. He throws out 3 hard light knives that deals 8 damage per second with infinite ammo. Each knife can be shot every 0.4 seconds.

I added the knives to the kit as a way to make his kit seem fast pace. Also I did not want him to have a gun because every other hero concept on this list has some form of a gun.

Alternate Fire

Hard Light Disc: Santiago plants a disc on a surface. Santiago must build his other abilities from a disc. Each disc has 20 health and costs 4 light. Santiago can store up to 8 at maximum with a 5 second cooldown. "Setting the foundations for a better tomorrow."


To further distance Santiago from the other builders, I added discs as a foundation that he has to build on. This adds further complexity and skill to the hero to where it isn't just where you're emoting while your builds do all the work for you.

Shift Ability

Hard Light Tower: Santiago creates a tower at the location of one disc and emits a tiny damage boost to allies within 3m of it that are in line of sight. The tower has 100 health and can be destroyed by enemies or after 10 seconds. Costs 10 light and has a cooldown of 12 seconds. “Esta torre nos protegerá."

The hard light tower gives that extra boost Santiago needs to make his primary fire even deadlier than it already is and encourages the player to regenerate faster with his primary fire.

E Ability

Hard Light Barrier: Santiago makes a barrier that has 600 health. When allies fire through the barrier, their bullets travel farther and are slightly increased in size. Can only be built between at least 4 of his discs. Costs: 4 discs: 8 light, 5 discs: 10 light, 6 discs: 12 light, 7 discs: 14 light, 8 discs: 16. Universal cooldown of 8 seconds. "My wall shall protect us, fire ahead!."

The slight increase in size and speed will make it harder for enemies to dodge bullets. Any bullets that hit any enemies after passing through the barrier will be counted for half accuracy. Having the barriers be more than 4 sides can help a lot as it can work with different shaped doorways such as the ones at the first point of Horizon Lunar Colony. There is a maximum distance between discs that can be used to create a barrier.

Ultimate

Sentinel Creator: Santiago creates a sentinel creator which, when an ally walks near it, will create a sentinel that will damage boost them and shoot at enemies they shoot at for 6 damage per second with no delay or reload time. If the sentinel creator is within range of a hard light tower, any sentinels that spawn will replicate the damage boost area of effect around the player they are defending. Each sentinel that is built costs 8 light and can only make 6 before breaking down. Has 100 health and 100 shields. Allies: "Sentinels are online." Enemies: "¡El poder de Vishkar está sobre ti!"

The sentinels are there to help your team dive and push onto a point. They are especially beneficial for a flanker on your team that gets caught out of position or a support in your back lines that gets flanked. Each sentinel being created is going to be what really brings your light resource down even further if the discs, tower, and barriers don't do that already. It is extremely important to constantly manage and watch over your light before you place your ultimate and while your ultimate is active.

Voice Lines

  • "South America stands together thanks to Vishkar." 
  • "Hard light will help shape the world into a new era of technology." 
  • "The Porlamar Omnium was because of God A.I. Supay, not the omnics under its  control." 
  • "Yes I can make you a diamond necklace out of hard light, but why would I do that?"

Conclusion

These are just two of the five hero concepts I made for Overwatch. I have one concept for a builder that is also unique in its own way and another concept for an two player omnic hero. I'll be posting those sometime within the next month or two. That's all for now folks!
